To remove those last bits of finish, palm sand with medium sandpaper (150 grit) until you see the bare wood. Then switch to fine sandpaper (200+ grit) until the entire piece is uniform. Wipe down the whole surface with a tack cloth to remove any dust from sanding.

Clean unfinished wood with a damp rag before staining. Fill a spray bottle with 2 cups water. Add 2 tbsp. Mist a lint-free cleaning rag with the spray. Rub the damp cloth over the unfinished wood, rubbing with the direction of the wood grain to prevent splintering. Let the wood air dry fully before staining.
These are always best completed prior to staining and finishing your wood project.. Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner after removing the sanding dust, but before you apply your stain.. Then be sure to remove any excess with a clean, dry cloth.
